I am an art historian with a focus on digital art history. I am interested in how digital methods and technologies are transforming art historical research and how they can be used to generate new questions in the field.
My research focuses on objects and materials represented in visual media of the late Middle Ages. I am investigating their functions in the networks of pictorial motifs and their contribution to the formation and mediation of narratives. To this end, I use graph databases and visualizations as well as semantic web technologies. This opens up the possibility of systematically comparing image elements in order to recognize patterns and peculiarities in the data and to subsequently fathom their causalities. A central starting point for my analyses is the image database REALonline, whose further development and processing is an important part of my work.
