archREAL was created between 2002 and 2004 as part of the interdisciplinary research project on the Fuchsenhof treasure find near Freistadt.

The aim was to implement a Europe-wide repository of small medieval objects from archaeological contexts. The project could not be continued for copyright reasons – the prohibition to take over larger image collections from other printed works.
